South Africa, even at the height of its repressive apartheid violence, was technically a democracy.

So too was the US under segregation and Jim Crow laws.

Israel is no more a democracy than they were, especially when it flaunts UN resolutions, some 140 since 2015 alone.

And you ignore the zealots on both sides of this debate.

One one hand, you actually have rational people who believe in a 2,500 year old myth, based on pronouncements given by a jealous, trap-setting, vengeful, homicidal and racist God who, when busy, orders his 'chosen people' to ethnically cleanse whole cities of every man, woman and child...and oh yeah, all their beasts of burden of both sexes too. (Jericho comes readily to mind.)

On the other hand, you have a group of rabid Muslim extremists, mullahs, muftis and ayatollahs, who see a way to demonize Israelis as a distracting focal point to keep Islam from a much needed Reformation.

And of course, if 75 years of internment has brought no change to a people's fortunes, then of course they are ripe for the likes of a religious prophet who promises them the total destruction of their oppressors.

Sounds a bit like the Old Testament's, as well as the Torah's and Koran's God, doesn't it?
