I went to this lecture given by a Lakota elder, Martin Brokenleg, way back in 2000, on how difficult it was to bring their adolescents back from the edge of the abyss.

They decided that the transition from child to adult must involve empowerment through three main components.

The ability to both give and receive an apology.

The ability to both give and receive a complement

And that all work should be love made visible.
