“I knew only that summer weather was conducive to a ‘swarm’ of White folk.”
How about ‘swarms’ of White Folk having the summer off from school?
And how about checking in with your language?
A swarm is most often used to describe insects.
‘Hordes’ of bloodthirsty savages was not okay…never should have been as it conveniently dehumanized subjects of genocidal madness.
‘White’ author Dee Brown’s Bury my Heart at Wounded Knee pointed out the dangers of mythological often racist words to describe Indigenous people.
And the Sandy Creek Massacre on Nov. 29, 1864, should be a part of every US history book.
The Commanding Officer of that massacre, Chivington, compared Indians to lice:
‘…I have come to kill Indians…Kill and scalp all, big and little; nits make lice.”
So, throwing out negative ‘white’ appellates, as if that speaks volumes about some kind of agreed upon desultory over-generalization of all ‘White’ people, is just plain wrong.
It’s racist.
What would your ancestors say about ‘White’ Captain Silas Soule and ‘White’ Lt. Joseph Cramer and their behavior during that monstrously awful day?
Both ‘White’ officers refused to order their men to use their weapons.
And by testifying against US Army Colonel John Chivington, Capt. Silas Soule arguably ended his career and assured his murder, a scant two weeks after he testified.
You have every right to be incensed by any religious group hoping to gain financially or otherwise by sending ‘voluntourists’ to any Reserve in Canada or the US.
It’s patronizing and an egregious insult to a very proud Cheyenne people who are still here despite the horrific machinations of a society hell bent on your eradication.
But really, ‘white people’ in need of a party or in need of good sun tan lotion?
That’s beneath you and the Creator.
I’m glad you didn’t end your otherwise important piece with ‘All my relations’.
