I am a Canadian...we are taught to laugh at ourselves. We understand...for the most part...irony.

Why?

Because the British can laugh at the French and their cooking while the French can laugh at all the burnt British food, surrounded by poorly dressed people, passing itself off as haute cuisine.

The Germans can laugh at most Europeans because of their inefficiency and lack of good sausages washed down by gallons of good beer.

The Italians can interrupt their arguments during dinner to laugh at the fact that too many Northern Europeans can't seem to remove the sticks of smug self-importance from their nether regions to laugh at themselves.

But as Canadians, because we have to sit on the fence until we are kicked off, with the British Lion to the East, the Russian Bear to the North, the Asian Dragon to the West and the American Eagle to the South, we have to consistently ask ourselves, "What's a poor little Beaver to do?"

Laugh at and then with ourselves.

A lot of our stories began with something like, 'You won't believe what happened to me today."

At least it used to be that way until 'uber-wokeness', in the form of cultural imperialism snuck across our borders and began the tyranny of the easily offended here too...

Yes! Canada! In the land that spawned John Candy, Jim Carrey, Eugene Levy, Andrea Martin,

Rick Moranis, Catherine O'Hara and Mike Myers to name but a few.

One of our universities recently planned to have a guest speaker who publicly stated that giving puberty inhibiting drugs, drugs that were originally created to help perimenopausal women deal with endometriosis/ and or for the chemical castration of imprisoned pedophiles, might be harmful to children.

Before bowing to pressure, the University had agreed to set up 'safe rooms' and ensure that security dogs would be there for those 'feeling threatened' while someone with contrarian ideas was on campus.

Lamentably, cancelling the event was not a laughing matter.

Your article on the other hand is a call for a return to sanity and wit...for people to not park their common sense and self-deprecating humour in the back lot of mediocrity and perfectionism and self-pity: now known as Virtue Lot 2021.
