Especially since Germany had been trying to bring about peace since 1917...using the USA as brokers.
Interesting that British Intelligence intercepted the Zimmerman telegram and that put an end to any chance of peace.
The French and British economies were on the brink of collapse in 1916-17, and peace would mean that each country, and not just Germany, would have to pay for the war.
And so, over the protestations of Canada, and some other countries, Germany was forced to pay, to lose vast swaths of territory, even separating East from West Prussia with the infamous Danzig corridor.
And suffer the humiliation of French occupying troops in the Saar, for more than a decade.
All this and German surrendered on captured territory.
Perfect recipe for a totalitarian regime to arise.
