Moral Panics can and do have that unhealthy effect and the press often exacerbates the 'dear reader' conflagration.
BTW, I'd posit that 'The Western World' most certainly is in the midst of one and the "Folk Devils' are cisgendered and white...preferably male.
Reminds me of the fallout from the Martensville, Saskatchewan Satanic Cult Day Care fiasco, when innocent people were named, some of them police officers no less, shamed and stained as pedophiles for years...supposedly for belonging to 'The Brotherhood of the Ram'.
One positive I suppose was the inadmissibility of evidence from clearly coached children.

The last payout to the falsely accused was in 2006.
