Most affairs are the response to an unarticulated or unrequited need.

But then there are the sociopaths for whom the above are nothing more than the blah-blah-blahs of bothersome complaints, marriage counsellors or reside in the trauma based insularity of unconscious manifestations, like hurting another by having an affair, that can and often do hurt others.

IOW, it takes courage to speak up without resorting to shouting or throwing things in order to control another human being. Children shout and bang the table and smash things, that's called a tantrum.
