In the bed next to me was a young Palestinian on his way to the London School of Economics.

As a young naive Canadian, I posed the question into the darkness:

'Why do the Israelis and Palestinians hate each other.?'

His response:

"My friend, Palestine has always been the crossroads of Empire. "

"If it was not the Egyptians, it was the Assyrians, or the Babylonians or the Greeks or the Romans or the Arabs or the Crusaders or the Ottomans or the British."

"We gave them a portion of what we produced from the land."

"But through it all, it was our land. "

"And now, the Israelis?"

"They are very bad guests."
